Arguments For and Against Cloning

To my students of the morning class,

Sorry for the inconvenience resulted, but this chest gives me no tolerance.

Anyway, I've made a worksheet for you to practice with the recording from www.uefap.com. It's a kind of summary.
With a partner, please try to complete the summary by completing the missing information (indicated with ...). You don't need to write long sentences. Just write the key words only. The worksheet can be downloaded here.

If you haven't got the recording. It's available here.
If you want to play it from your MP3 player, download it from here

We've been running out of time. Next week will be the mid term test.

Sorry.

CLONING: ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST

I. INTRODUCTION: What cloning is?
• The building block of living organisms: double helix genes
• First animal cloned: frog
• Cloning is multiplying the genetically modified living organisms into limitless copies of genetically identical creatures.

II. Cloning of non-human animals
• First clone of sheep
o When : 1997
o Where : Roselyn Institute in Edinburgh
o Name of the clone : Dolly
o Sex of the clone : female
o Purpose: to use her milk to develop treatment for serious human diseases
• Arguments against the cloning of non-human animals
o Religious objection: Human beings can’t play god.
o Unnaturalness: It’s negative value to change and copy animals or plants.
o Ethics: Man has no rights to exploit non-human animals.
o Health: Viruses may mutate if it is introduced into human body.

III. Aspects of the cloning of human being.
• Arguments for cloning of human beings:
o Aspects of human choice: It’s human freedom to clone himself/herself.
o Potential medical applications: Partial cloning to avoid diseases carried by pregnant mothers to their children.
o Trials for new drugs.
o Make the ease of organ transplanting to human beings.
• Arguments against cloning of human beings:
o Theological argument: It’s unnatural to clone human if clones have no souls.
o Against human rights: Human life can’t be guaranteed by genetic engineer.
o Ethics: Objection to killing the source of organ to transplant.
o Demographic argument: Overpopulation.
o Psychological argument: Psychological pressure on clone subject.

IV. Are controls needed? What controls?
• Science and technology: human dignity to balance state control
• Market place: appropriate worldwide regulation in global market

V. Science, Technology, and Ethics
• Benefits outweigh the disbenefits?
• What should the relationship be between science, technology, and ethics?

Hi, everybody
I think that this assignment, listening to lecture, is more difficult than before.
I tried not to look at the text given by uefap to do it. I need 4-5 times to listen to the recording to be able to answer. Moreover, the internet cafe was too noisy.

In my view, we face some difficulty in listening to lecture or long speech i.e.
1. CONCENTRATION
Somehow in the middle of the speech I often can't focus on it. Especially, when I tried to catch the point of the previous section.

2. TECHNICAL WORDS
Since the material is usually about specific thing which is to be understood in further and deeper study, we have to be able to catch the technical words spoken and to write it in proper spelling. In this case: the name of serious diseases, genetic terms, etc.

However, I hope that more practice will lead me to a better listening ability.

Dhika,

It's quite difficult to catch every single word from a speech. If you print the cloze activity (the text with blank spaces), and read the text, you will realize that you can understand the content of the text although the blank spaces are still blank.

Also, always have a pen to take notes while listening. When you don't do anything, you will get lost very easily. Keep your head up. But keep relax. Do not put your hand on your cheek or head, because doing so will attract another thing to come to your mind (this is what usually happens to me).

Then, about the technical problem, the noise I mean....
You can download the file and play with your MP3 player at home. I have put the link too.

About the technical words:
Well... we need to broaden our horizon. How? One of the ways is by reading a lot.

Katak aja ga betah di dalam tempurung... ya toh?

Hello, everybody……….

I just want to repeat our listening class on December, 23, 2008 about Addiction. As we discussed in class, Addiction is the condition of being an addict, unable to stop and extremely interested in and spend a lot of time on it. Addiction is caused by habit and desire to try and also social environment.
There many kinds of addiction, includes:
- Drugs
- Cigarette
- Alcoholic drink
- Marijuana
- Gambling
- Television
- Games
- Music
- Comic, Magazine
- Food-mint candy
- SMS
- Internet
Here are some questions to check how long you are addicted by Internet:
1. How often do you spend for Online?
2. Which do you prefer, assembling with your friends to going online?
3. How often do you uncontrolled time when go online?
4. How often do you ask for your friend to wait for a moment?
5. How often do you postpone your programs to do for Online?
Reply honesty!
A = Rarely = 1
B = Sometimes = 2
C = Frequently = 3
D = Often = 4
E = Always = 5
Then, account your result!
0-10 = SAFE
11-19 = MODERATE
20-29 = ADDICT
Finally, you know you are an addict or not. Besides, you can also resolve or prevent an addiction.
